Kye Allums 

November 3

GW junior Kye Allums is the first openly transgender male student-athlete to compete for the Colonials' Division I women's basketball program. Mr. Allums has decided to live as a male student and be referred to as a male. The George Washington University supports Kye and his right to make this decision.

GreenGov 

October 5-7, 2010

GW hosted the GreenGov symposium, a conference that brought together leaders from federal, state and local governments; nonprofit and academic communities; and the private sector to identify opportunities for greening the federal government. Participants shared challenges and best practices and discussed cutting-edge approaches for the future.

Admiral Thad Allen speaks at GW 

September 24, 2010

Admiral Thad Allen came to GW to receive GW’s Colin Powell Public Service Award. Allen then gave a speech on “Unprecedented Events, Unprecedented Leadership Challenges,” which discussed his experience as national incident commander of the BP oil spill. It was the first time Allen had given such a speech on a college campus.

West Hall 

September 20, 2010

West Hall is one of the newest and greenest buildings at GW. Previously known as Pelham Hall, West Hall is a residence Hall located on GW’s Mount Vernon campus. West Hall houses 287 students, tripling the number of students previously housed in this residence hall. West Hall’s unique amenities include a recording studio, dance studio and black box theater. These features enhance the cultural and community experiences made available to students.

Freshman Day of Service  

September 11, 2010

More than 2,000 George Washington University freshmen and student leaders visited 14 sites in the Washington, D.C.-area to volunteer their time for the university’s second annual Freshman Day of Service. GW’s service day coincided with the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Students worked on service projects focused on sustainability, environmental protection and honoring veterans.

Freshman Convocation 

August 29, 2010

The academic year officially started with Freshman Convocation, a time-honored University tradition. Freshman will arrive with their housemates wearing matching T-shirts and buttons representing their school. GW President Steven Knapp and Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Steven Lerman joined the class of 2014 to begin their academic journey.

Move-In Day

August 28, 2010

George Washington University freshman and returning students moved into their residence halls located across the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. GW President Steven Knapp and his wife, Diane Robinson Knapp, joined nearly 1,000 staff and Foggy Bottom neighbors to help students move-in.

The DC Health and Academic Prep Program

July 23, 2010

The DC Health and Academic Prep Program is a four-week program for Washington, D.C. graduating public or charter high school seniors, who are going to a college or university in Fall 2010 with an interest in pursuing a health career, to engage in and explore various medical and public health careers. Working directly with graduate students, doctors, and other medical professionals, DC HAPP scholars learn about various medical professions as possible career paths for their future, as well as prepare for their upcoming college experience.

 GW's NCAC Director, Steve Kan, on Future of Automotive Safety and Obama's 2016 Fuel Regulations

March 29, 2010

Steve Kan, director of GW's National Crash Analysis Center (NCAC), discusses the future of automotive safety, designing better vehicles for the future and President Obama's 2016 fuel regulations. GW's NCAC  received $200,000 research grant to develop computer simulation techniques to study the crash impact of composite materials and thermoplastics in vehicles.
