Statement from GW President Steven Knapp on the Passing of Dave Brubeck
"Dave Brubeck’s accomplishments as a pianist, composer and ambassador of American culture are legendary.  He introduced jazz in a uniquely inspiring way to generations of young people around the world, including generations of our students.  The George Washington University is honored to have welcomed him to our campus and celebrated his achievements on several occasions. Mr. Brubeck received the university’s President’s Medal in 2001; in 2010, he was awarded an honorary degree at our commencement ceremony, where he spoke with great eloquence about the relation between jazz and our nation’s values.   The university also hosted a Brubeck Festival in 2008 that celebrated his music as well as his intellectual and philosophical contributions. We join Dave Brubeck's legions of fans in mourning his passing and acknowledging his extraordinary role in representing America’s most distinctive contribution to the arts."
