WASHINGTON (June 2, 2026) – French officials have seized a Russian shadow fleet tanker suspected of being used to smuggle sanctioned goods. The ship was detained 400 nautical miles west of the coastal French region Brittany. Maritime authorities noticed that the Russian vessel was flying a false flag.
This is the fourth time France has boarded a suspected shadow fleet tanker since September 2025. Due to the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion on Ukraine in 2022, Moscow has been using shadow fleets to avoid international sanctions imposed on its oil exports.
