Media Tip Sheet: Press Freedom Under Scrutiny After Ban On Three News Outlets from the White House

September 23, 2026

WASHINGTON (September 23, 2026) – On September 18th, the White House announced that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would be banned, accusing the outlets of reporting “fake news.” The following day, journalists from all three organizations were denied access and had their White House press credentials deactivated or confiscated. The news organizations have since sued the Trump administration, arguing that the restrictions violate First Amendment protections. The legal battle raises broader questions about press freedom and how much authority a presidential administration has to determine which journalists receive White House access.
