Through ikat fabrics recently donated to the George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum by collector Guido Goldman, this new exhibition will focus on the sophisticated dyeing technique known in Central Asia as abrband, or “binding the clouds.” Ikats illustrate the colors, designs, and shapes that Central Asian men and women found appealing. A number of the wall hangings on display showcase early to mid-19th century ikat fabrics and designs that are either unique or not widely known.
