To the George Washington University community:

It is with deep sadness that I report that a member of our George Washington family, graduate student Patrick Casey, 33, of Clifton Park, New York, has died as a result of injuries he sustained in an off-campus incident last week. We will provide further information about this tragic event when we are able to confirm it.

Patrick was a veteran who had served in the U.S Army Infantry. He had just returned from a year of service in Afghanistan and was beginning his studies in the Masters in International Affairs program at the Elliott School of International Affairs. I have visited his family, as have other members of the university leadership, to offer our support. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time of extraordinary loss.

Patrick's family has begun to make funeral arrangements, and we will work with them and his friends to memorialize his life. Further information will be conveyed to the GW community as soon as possible.

Members of our community who are affected by this tragedy are encouraged to contact the University Counseling Center at (202) 994-5300 or http://gwired.gwu.edu/counsel.

Sincerely,

Steven Knapp
President
The George Washington University

A memorial service for Patrick Casey will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 6 in Veterans Park at the corner of 22nd and G streets.
