The George Washington University has announced that it has reached agreement on a first contract with Local 500 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents most part-time faculty at the university.

"I would like to extend my appreciation to all parties involved in the negotiations over the past several months," said GW President Steven Knapp. "We are pleased that the constructive atmosphere at the bargaining table made it possible for the parties to agree to contract provisions that will enable the university to continue to recruit competitively and to retain our wide array of part-time teaching talent from government, industry, and academia."

The Washington, D.C., area affords The George Washington University unique teaching resources. The university has been able to attract to its part-time faculty an extraordinary number of highly specialized experts in every field imaginable. This is a strength that few institutions of higher learning can match.

The university is pleased that the compensation for part-time faculty will now be increased. The university has not increased the minimum per-course rates for several years due to restrictions relating to the union organizing and subsequent negotiations. The provisions of the collective bargaining agreement enable the university to be flexible in its compensation, hiring, and retention practices and preserve important academic and management policies and practices. The agreement also provides a framework for more systematic evaluation of part-time faculty and requires the use of GW's e-mail for communication with students, administrators, and other university faculty. The university will undertake a study of the availability of office space, computers and printers, telephones, mailboxes, and office supplies. A joint committee of faculty and administrators will develop recommendations from that study.

The university has maintained good relations with unions representing other employees over many years and looks forward to an ongoing constructive relationship with Local 500 as GW moves forward in its mission to provide an excellent education to our students.

The contract ratified by the SEIU Local 500 runs through June 30, 2010.
