WASHINGTON (April 30, 2025)- For over five decades following the 1972 rapprochement between the United States and China, the two countries seemed to be steadily building a sound relationship, even accounting for periodic setbacks like the Tiananmen Square massacre. The last decade, though, has seen a sharp increase in tensions and a complete reorientation of American policies toward China—from "engagement" to "competition”, especially in today’s political climate.
For more context on the matter, please consider David Shambaugh, Gaston Sigur Professor of Asian Studies, Political Science & International Affairs, and Director of the China Policy Program at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs. Shambaugh is an expert on modern and contemporary Chinese history, China’s domestic politics, China’s foreign relations, China’s military and security, and more broadly international relations of Asia.
In addition to Shambaugh’s expertise, he is the author of a new book Breaking the Engagement: How China Won & Lost America which examines the evolution, expansion, and disintegration of the American engagement strategy towards China.
