EVENT:
Famous Pentagon Papers source Daniel Ellsberg will discuss his new book, “The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner,” at the George Washington University.
Mr. Ellsberg is an American activist and former military analyst who precipitated a national political controversy in 1971 when he released the Pentagon Papers to The Washington Post and several other newspapers, as recently chronicled in the Academy Award-nominated film “The Post.” These top-secret documents exposed a Pentagon study of U.S. government decision-making in relation to the Vietnam War.
Mr. Ellsberg's latest book, “The Doomsday Machine,” is a firsthand account of America's nuclear program in the 1960s and is an exposé on the dangers of America's top-secret, 70-year-long nuclear policy that continues to this day. “The Doomsday Machine” is on the American Library Association’s six-book short list for the 2018 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.
This event is sponsored by three groups in the GW Elliott School of International Affairs: Partnerships for International Strategies in Asia; the Leadership, Ethics and Practice Initiative; and Nuclear Security Working Group.
The event will be followed by a book signing. Copies of Mr. Ellsberg’s book will be available for purchase.
