WASHINGTON (July 30, 2025)--More than two in five US adults currently have obesity, a condition that puts them at risk for serious diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And the number of people with obesity has risen sharply in recent decades.
In the past, people trying to lose weight were advised to step up their activity level but new research by a multicenter team suggests that a high calorie diet, one that contains a lot of ultra-processed foods, may be a key driver of obesity.
