WASHINGTON (July 9, 2025)--The EPA held a hearing this week so that experts could comment on a recent proposal to repeal greenhouse gas emission standards for power plants. Lynn Goldman, Dean of the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, gave testimony in opposition to the proposed rule.
“The proposed EPA plan would loosen standards to curb pollutants that contribute to climate change, one of the greatest threats to human health,” said Goldman. “Climate change causes extreme weather events like flooding and environmental conditions that put people at risk. As we saw in Texas, earlier this week, children are often most vulnerable to these kinds of natural disasters.”
Goldman, a pediatrician and a nationally known expert on environmental health, formerly served as the Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention at the EPA from 1993-1998.
She went on to point out that fossil-fueled power plants are one of the nation’s largest sources of climate pollution. If left intact, the current standards would save lives and prevent thousands of asthma attacks and other illnesses.
Goldman concluded her testimony by calling on the EPA to withdraw its proposal.
