GW Expert Available for Analysis: Judge issues partial gag in Trump federal election interference case

October 16, 2023

WASHINGTON (October 16)--On Monday, a judge imposed a limited gag order on former President Donald J. Trump, thereby restricting  the former president from making public statements attacking the witnesses, prosecutors or court staff involved in the federal criminal case.

According to the judge, Tanya S. Chutkan, Trump’s freedom of speech rights do not permit him “to launch a pre-trial smear campaign” against those individuals. “No other defendant would be allowed to do so, and I’m not going to allow it in this case.”
