GW Expert Available for Comment on Tennessee Law on Retention Policy for Elementary School Students

Third-grade students in Tennessee could face serious repercussions if they do not pass a state reading test. In just a few months, students who do not pass could be held back a year. The retention policy is part of a state law passed in 2021, intended to boost long-lagging reading scores and stem pandemic learning losses.

State legislators have been scrambling to consider changes to the law, which, as it stands, could impact more than half of the state’s third-graders.

Dr. Joshua Glazer, Associate Professor of Education Policy at GW, is closely following this developing story and available for comment.
