EVENT: The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development hosts a forum on the impact of philanthropy in education with Dr. Chip Edelsberg, an educator, philanthropist and former executive director of the Jim Joseph Foundation.

The forum, part of the school’s “Conversations that Matter” series, will examine how Americans are among the most generous people in the world in donating billions of dollars to charity. But this arrangement also raises legitimate concerns about the effects of unfettered private spending on programs and activities that affect the general welfare. In an age of increased anxiety over the influence of concentrated wealth, the question of whether rules for philanthropy and charitable giving should be revisited has become a hotly debated policy issue.
