GW Report on Wildfire Resilience: Unprecedented LA Wildfires Highlight Urgency of New Resilience Framework

January 28, 2025

Fueled by extreme winds, dry conditions, and the mounting effects of climate change, wildfires have left behind devastation in communities across Los Angeles. With over 130,000 residents evacuated and critical infrastructure stretched thin, the need for proactive disaster resilience has never been clearer.

Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration (TSPPPA) at the George Washington University has published a report, Key Opportunities and Challenges for Community Investment in Community Disaster Resilience Zones, offering a data-driven roadmap for tackling exactly these challenges.

Focused on wildfire-prone areas like Los Angeles County, the report provides actionable insights into:

  • Addressing critical infrastructure vulnerabilities, such as water, energy, and transportation systems.
  • Integrating early warning systems for disasters like wildfires into community planning.
  • Mobilizing private investment to complement stretched public resources, targeting high-risk communities.
  • Developing resilience hubs to support evacuations and protect public health during crises.

As the report highlights, areas like Los Angeles—designated Community Disaster Resilience Zones by FEMA—face disproportionate risks due to economic, environmental, and social vulnerabilities. The current wildfire crisis exemplifies the report’s call for investment in infrastructure, community engagement, and climate adaptation to mitigate future disasters.
