WASHINGTON (August 11, 2026) – With the Alien Terrorist Removal Court’s release hearing now canceled amid a dispute over the government’s handling of classified evidence, I wanted to flag GW Law professor Aram Gavoor, a leading authority on the court, as a source for the legal questions now emerging from its first-ever case.
The court, created in 1996 but inactive since, was designed to allow the government to pursue the removal of alleged “alien terrorists” in cases involving sensitive or classified information. Now, its first case is raising fundamental questions about how that process can work while preserving due process.
Gavoor has studied the court for years, including its creation in 1996 and its decades-long inactivity. He is uniquely positioned to explain what its first case means for the future of national security immigration enforcement.
