Media Tip Sheet: America's Housing Affordability Crisis

July 16, 2026

WASHINGTON (July 16, 2026) – A new White House report found that the nation's housing affordability crisis has reached historic levels. Current estimates suggest that the U.S. needs around 10 million additional housing units to meet current housing demand. As homeownership slips further out of reach and affordable rentals remain scarce, policymakers continue debating how best to address the crisis.

If you're covering the issue, I'd be happy to connect you with Vanessa Perry, professor of marketing and strategic management at the George Washington University School of Business and an expert on housing markets and real estate finance.

Professor Perry can discuss whether federal legislation is the most effective way to address the housing crisis, which policy proposals are most likely to make a meaningful impact and why affordability challenges continue to persist despite years of policy efforts.
