WASHINGTON (September 22, 2025) – Ben & Jerry’s and parent company Unilever remain in a legal and public dispute over the brand’s stance on controversial social issues. This dispute most recently led to co-founder Jerry Greenfield’s resignation.
David Halliday, teaching associate professor of strategic management & public policy at the GW School of Business, can offer expert insight on the business and reputational stakes.
“Jerry Greenfield staying on for over 20 years after Unilever’s acquisition is remarkable,” said Halliday. “He helped keep Ben & Jerry’s differentiated in a market where many premium brands have lost quality. His departure reflects both politics and frustration with the brand’s slide into the middle of the market, especially as competitors like Jeni’s capture the high end.”
