Media Tip Sheet: Biden Administration Mandates Nursing Staff Minimum at Nursing Homes

April 23, 2024

In an announcement by the Biden Administration, nursing homes will now be mandated to have a minimum number of nurses on-site.

The new rule, which is the first of its kind, mandates nursing homes must meet a minimum staffing requirement for registered nurses and nurse aides.

In an effort to improve care for nursing home residents, the rule requires a registered nurse to be on-site for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also requires enough staff to care for every resident, providing at least three hours of care each day.

The George Washington University has experts available to discuss this new mandate. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact Katelyn Deckelbaum, [email protected].

Richard Ricciardi is an associate dean for clinical practice and community engagement in the GW School of Nursing and the executive director for the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at GW. He can discuss the public health issue around registered nurse staffing ratios in nursing homes.

Melissa Batchelor, an associate professor of nursing and geriatric nursing researcher in the GW School of Nursing. She recently was the co-author of the publication, A Call to the CMS: Mandate Adequate Professional Nurse Staffing in Nursing Homes. She can discuss the mandate and her research around this topic.

Adam Dean, associate professor of political science has researched staff turnover in nursing homes in the study Labor Unions and Staff Turnover in US Nursing Homes and the workplace environments inside U.S. nursing homes in this study.
