Media Tip Sheet: Biden Administration Takes Steps to Expand Reproductive Rights on Roe v. Wade Anniversary

The White House has unveiled new measures aimed at enhancing access to contraception, abortion medication, and emergency abortions at hospitals, underscoring President Biden's commitment to reproductive rights. The announcement coincides with the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision and is part of Biden's strategy to distinguish himself from Republican opponents who support stringent abortion restrictions.

Faculty experts at George Washington University are available to offer insight, analysis and commentary on the new measures and how this move could impact Biden’s presidential campaign. Public Health & Women’s Health

Sara Rosenbaum, is the Emeritus Professor of Health Policy and Management, and previously served as founding Chair of the Milken Institute School of Public Health Department of Health Policy. She is a nationally recognized expert on health care access for vulnerable populations.

Julia Strasser, is the executive director of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health and an assistant research professor of health policy and management at the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health. She is an expert on reproductive health care and access to essential care including abortion.

Amita N. Vyas is an associate professor at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health and Director for the MPH Maternal and Child Health program and the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health. She is an expert in health inequities and maternal morbidity.

Linda Cassar, clinical associate professor of nursing, has worked primarily with the maternal/child health patient population over her 30 years as a nurse, working in Labor and Delivery, Mother/Baby, High-Risk Antepartum, and Outpatient Community Perinatal Education. Currently, she teaches across all programs in the School of Nursing, teaching OB and Women’s Health, and Nursing Leadership. Cassar is an expert on maternal and child health as well as women’s health. 

Tarnisha Hemphill is an assistant professor of nursing. She is helping co-lead the launch of GW Nursing’s Midwifery Program, which provides education on midwifery history, the scope of practice, and the profession of midwifery in the first two years of the program. Hemphill says midwifery is the answer to the maternity care crisis in the U.S. She is an expert in maternal and women’s health. 
Suzan Ulrich, an associate professor of nursing and Director of Midwifery Education, has been a midwife since 1983 and an educator of nurses and midwives for over 40 years. Ulrich will also co-lead GW Nursing’s Midwifery Program. She can discuss the impact of the Dobbs decision on midwifery care as well as topics relevant to the maternal mortality rate and maternal and child health in the U.S.

Law

Sonia Suter is the Henry St. George Tucker III Dean’s Research Professor of Law; The Kahan Family Research Professor of Law; and Founding Director of the Health Law Initiative. Suter is an expert on the intersection of law, medicine, and bioethics, with a particular focus on reproductive rights, emerging reproductive technologies, and ethical and legal issues in genetics. Suter participates in national working groups and advisory boards and as a consultant to policymakers on this issue.

Politics

Sarah Binder is a professor of political science. Binder's work focuses on the politics of legislative institutions, including their origins, development and impact on policy outcomes. Her areas of expertise include Congress, Legislative politics, American political economy, and political parties.

Casey Burgat, Legislative Affairs Program Director and Assistant Professor at George Washington University. He is an expert in Congress and Judiciary sections, congressional capacity and reform. He has served as a Senior Governance Fellow and worked at the Congressional Research Service. Burgat also has experience in federal rulemaking, issues of congressional reform and staffing, federal budgeting, and federal advisory committees.
