Media Tip Sheet: Brazil Hosts Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization in Two-Day Summit

August 9, 2023

WASHINGTON (August 9, 2023) – Brazil hosted a two-day summit with the eight South American countries that share the Amazon rainforest. Their main goal was to create a unified pact to end deforestation and create a universal standard to preserve the rainforest. This summit marked the first time in over a decade that the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) had gathered. In a joint declaration issued on Wednesday, the nations agreed to combat deforestation goals individually, but fell short on a shared goal for deforestation.
