WASHINGTON (August 12, 2026) – As BTS brings its Arirang World Tour to Baltimore, the group’s arrival is likely to have an economic impact well beyond the concert venue. Four BTS concerts in Las Vegas this May generated an estimated $340 million dollars, offering a glimpse of the economic influence of this K-pop group.
Jungho Suh, Project Director of GW’s Korean Management Institute and an expert in service management, tourism and Korean management, can discuss BTS’s economic impact on the DMV, the business of K-pop and how cultural influence can translate into economic and organizational power.
BTS’s influence also extends beyond its economic impact. The group’s decision to withdraw from the Grammys over the creation of a category separating Korean artists from the general fields offers insight to how globally influential groups can use their power to challenge established systems. All seven members have been Recording Academy voters since 2019, raising broader questions about whether artists can create lasting institutional change not only through public protest, but by working within the organizations that shape their industries.
