Media Tip Sheet: Education as an Opportunity for Integration: Assessing Colombia, Peru, and Chile's Educational Responses to the Venezuelan Migration Crisis

With over 5 million Venezuelans fleeing their home country, Latin America is facing the largest migration crisis in its history. Colombia, Peru, and Chile host the largest numbers of Venezuelan migrants in the region. Each country has responded differently to the crisis in terms of the provision of education. Venezuelan migrants attempting to enter the primary, secondary, and higher education systems encounter a variety of barriers, from struggles with documentation, to limited availability of spaces in schools, to cultural barriers and xenophobia.

Berhard StreitwiesterBernhard Streitwieser is an Associate Professor of International Education & International Affairs Director, International Education Program, Co-Chair, UNESCO Chair in International Education for Development and Director, Refugee Educational Advancement Laboratory (REAL). His areas of expertise include refugees and education and international higher education. He just wrote this piece on this growing issue.

Dr. Streitwieser’s research looks comparatively at the impact of globalization on the internationalization of higher education. He has three main focus areas:

  • Integration: research on the integration of migrants and refugees into higher education, with a geographic focus on Europe (Germany) and the United States
