Media Tip Sheet: FDA Warns: Popular Mousse Sunscreens May Not Work and Could Pose Safety Risks

August 14, 2025

The FDA is issuing a stark warning about popular mousse-style sunscreens — including products from well-known brands like Supergoop! — that may fail to protect consumers from harmful UV rays and could present unexpected safety hazards.

In new enforcement actions, the agency sent warning letters to multiple companies, citing efficacy concerns, regulatory violations and packaging risks.

Brands cited include Supergoop!, Vacation Inc., Kalani Sunwear, Botao Baby, and Tizo Skin. Some companies are already pulling products from their U.S. sites.

Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is available to discuss what these FDA warnings mean for your sunscreen routine, how to choose effective sunscreen and the risks of deceptive packaging.
