Media Tip Sheet: Federal Enforcement of REAL ID Begins on May 7, 2025

May 7, 2025

Starting today, travelers boarding a domestic flight in the United States will be required to carry an identification card that complies with the REAL ID law.

The law aims to standardize state issued IDs so counterfeit IDs are easier to catch. States will also be required to check the veracity of the information put on these cards. Passports, passport cards, Global Entry, NEXUS, FAST, SENTRI, DoD IDs, green cards, and enhanced driver's licenses issued by some states are all acceptable forms of ID.

The George Washington University has experts available who can discuss REAL ID and its roll out. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact claire [dot] sabinatgwu [dot] edu (claire[dot]sabin[at]gwu[dot]edu).

Faith Bradley is an assistant professor of information systems and technology management at the GW School of Business. Bradley published her doctoral dissertation on REAL ID in the Journal of the Knowledge Economy.
