Media Tip Sheet: Former NPR Music Director & Rock Hall Executive on Brian Wilson’s Legacy

June 13, 2025

WASHINGTON (June 12, 2025) –  Brian Wilson, the founder and creative force of the Beach Boys, has died at 82. Wilson was the creative mastermind behind the Beach Boys’ unique sound, writing hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “California Girls” that helped define 1960’s California pop culture. With over 35 Billboard Top 40 hits, his songwriting captured the carefree fantasy of youth, surf, and endless summer.

Lauren Onkey, director of the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design at the George Washington University, brings a rare combination of scholarly and industry insight. She formerly led NPR Music (known for its Tiny Desk Concerts) and served as vice president of education and public programming at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her work explores the intersections of race, identity, and popular music, making her uniquely equipped to speak to Wilson’s artistry, legacy, and cultural resonance.
