Media Tip Sheet: Gun Deaths Among Children Increase in States with Loosened Gun Laws

June 10, 2025

A new study published this week shows that over 7,000 children have died from firearm related injuries since the Supreme Court ruled in 2010 to allow states to set their own gun laws.

Researchers found an increase in gun deaths in states that loosened their gun laws following the 2010 ruling, while states with strict gun laws saw a decline in firearm related deaths.

Elizabeth Choma, clinical assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Nursing, is a pediatric nurse practitioner whose work focuses on firearm safety education in families. She can discuss this study and firearm deaths among children.
