WASHINGTON (Sept. 6, 2023)— A dangerous, record-breaking heat wave is hitting the eastern United States, with new high temperatures being set in multiple cities from Texas to New England. The extreme heat wave has prompted many cities to issue heat advisories. Some schools have sent students home early due to the lack of air conditioning, while others are shifting to remote learning due to the heat. Schools are also making decisions whether to allow sports practices to continue during the high temperatures.

Mary Barron is an associate professor of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences at the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health. An expert on sport-related youth injuries, she is available to discuss ways to mitigate heat illness during exercise and the best practices for schools to follow for student athletics during a heat wave.
