March 22, 2023

WASHINGTON (March 22, 2023) — On Wednesday the Biden administration announced it will issue plans to overhaul the U.S. organ transplant system in order to shorten wait times for patients, many of whom die before receiving life-saving transplants. In particular, the responsibilities of the nonprofit manager, United Network for Organ Sharing, which is the sole entity to operate the U.S. transplant system, will likely be broken up and opened to competitive bidding from other organizations.

Stephen H. Gray is an associate professor of surgery at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and a provider with Transplant Services at the GW Medical Faculty Associates. Last year he was part of a team of surgeons to complete the first liver transplant at George Washington University’s Transplant Institute.
