WASHINGTON (Nov. 7, 2022)—As control of the U.S. Congress will be decided on Tuesday’s election, U.S. aid towards Ukraine may also hang in the balance. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said last month that a GOP-led House is likely to oppose more aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia saying, “Ukraine is important, but at the same time, it can’t be the only thing [Congressmembers] do, and it can’t be a blank check.” Last May when the House voted to provide $40 billion in aid for Ukraine, 57 Republicans voted against the bill. If Republicans take control of the House they will have the power to block future aid to Ukraine but can also choose to slow it down or pare it back.
