Media Tip Sheet: GW Experts Available to Discuss Health Misinformation Lowering U.S. Life Expectancy

April 12, 2023

WASHINGTON (April 12, 2023)— Recently the US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf said life expectancy in the U.S. is between three and five years lower than the average in other high-income countries — and the gap comes in part from health misinformation. Califf says that better regulation is needed to combat health misinformation that’s rampant online.

Emily R. Smith, an assistant professor of global health at the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, is available to comment on the trend of health misinformation that can lead to poor health and even premature death. She can talk about dangerous health misinformations surrounding COVID and other health topics.
