Media Tip Sheet: House Speaker Election Drama

Kevin McCarthy’s quest to become Speaker of the House is not going according to plan. The House Republican leader’s path to the Speaker’s gavel is riddled with obstacles, namely the stubborn resistance of far-right members looking to flex their political muscles against someone they see as an establishment squish. The smart money remains on McCarthy and the prospects of drafting a unity candidate or even a non-member of Congress are dim. At the moment, however, it is clear that McCarthy simply does not have the votes.
