Media Tip Sheet: June Jobs Report: The ‘Great Resignation’ is not Going Away Anytime Soon

July 8, 2022

Employers in the United States added 372,000 new jobs in June and the unemployment rate stayed at 3.6%, a sign to experts that there is still a strong job market.

“What we have here is millions of jobs that Americans don’t really want. It’s what I call the trifecta of the ‘Great Resignation’ - low pay, horrible working conditions and bad bosses - that are driving more people to find their next opportunity,” Professor Kayes says. “On top of that, job participation rates were lower than expected, which means more people are leaving the jobs that are not what they’re looking for.”

Professor Kayes adds that this latest job report indicates the ‘Great Resignation’ is still ongoing and it’s a trend in the job market that’s likely to stick around for the long term.

“There’s also this group that won’t come back to the workforce - working mothers, for example, who can’t find childcare now that they’re required to come back to the office. I think companies are behind the trend on this. As employees are looking for better pay, better conditions and better work-life balance, employers are stuck trying to catch up. This is a new era around employment and labor participation.”
