WASHINGTON (July 31, 2025) – JetBlue and United Airlines announced on July 29 that the U.S. Department of Transportation has cleared the way for their new partnership, named Blue Sky.

For expert insight on what this means for travelers, airlines, and the broader hospitality industry, please consider Jungho Suh, a teaching assistant professor of management at the George Washington University School of Business. His areas of expertise include service management, entrepreneurship, social, and governance reporting in the travel industry, and digital platforms in tourism and hospitality.

"United and JetBlue’s 'Blue Sky' alliance reflects a broader shift as low-cost and legacy carriers blur traditional boundaries. With Frontier adding first-class and Southwest ending open seating, the industry is redefining itself,” said Suh. “This partnership could help ease congestion at New York airports, but the lasting impact hinges on whether it enhances, not complicates, the travel experience amid ongoing supply chain challenges."
