April 25, 2023

Imani Cheers

Harry Belafonte, the legendary Jamaican-American singer, actor, and activist, has died at the age of 96. As an artist, Belafonte introduced American audiences to Afro-Caribbean music and distinguished himself as one of the few Black leading men in 1950s Hollywood. As an activist, he was a tireless advocate for marginalized people in America and abroad, marching alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement and campaigning against the apartheid regime in South Africa.

Imani Cheers, an associate professor of media and public affairs at the George Washington University, is available to discuss the monumental legacy of Harry Belafonte, both as a trailblazing figure in American popular culture and a champion of social justice and equality.
