Media Tip Sheet: LIV Golf Invitational Series Heads to Bedminster

July 28, 2022

The LIV Golf Invitational Series heads to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, this weekend, and the new league that has dominated headlines continues to stir controversy. Several groups announced their disapproval of the league this week, including The National Press Club. Critics say the Saudi-backed tour attempts to minimalize human rights concerns in the Kingdom.

GW Professor Lisa Delpy NeirottiIf you’re looking for context on this matter, please consider Lisa Delpy Neirotti, an associate professor of sport management at the George Washington University. Delpy Neirotti has been a professor of sport, event and tourism management at GW for more than 30 years.

Professor Delpy Neirotti has been following the new league closely. She can speak to the effects the LIV Golf league could have on the PGA moving forward. She can also discuss the wave of high-profile athletes jumping to LIV Golf and the options players may have who are now suspended from the PGA.

“In today's world, restricting individual rights and opportunities may not look good and it may be better to instead look internally and find ways to make some changes to the PGA Tour that players have proposed to make it more attractive," Professor Delpy Neirotti says. "It could do more damage than benefit for the Tour to ban players, especially the young rising stars.”

Additionally, LIV Golf announced its schedule for 2023 and Professor Delpy Neirotti can weigh in on the future of the sport.
