Media Tip Sheet: Maryland Governor to Pardon 175,000 Marijuana Convictions

June 17, 2024

WASHINGTON (June 17, 2024)—Maryland Governor Wes Moore is pardoning 175,000 marijuana convictions. This is one of the nation’s most sweeping acts of clemency involving the drug and its recreational use. The hopes of this sweep is “to heal decades of social and economic injustice that disproportionately harms Black and Brown people,” The Washington Post reports.

For more context on the matter, please consider Peter Meyers, Professor of Law Emeritus at the George Washington University Law School. Meyers teaches Drugs and the Law, and has litigated this very issue of reclassifying marijuana in the D.C. Circuit. In addition, Meyers is an expert in appellate law. Meyers has published articles on the constitutionality of pretrial drug testing, pursuant of the Second Look Act, and reform of the flaws in the Federal Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.
