Media Tip Sheet: Media, Social Media and the First Amendment

September 22, 2025

Last week, ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show “indefinitely” off the air, reportedly after political pressure from the FCC, according to New York Times.

Yesterday, Reuters reported that the Trump administration is imposing new restrictions on media coverage of the U.S. military and “journalists that publish unauthorized sensitive information could have their press credentials revoked.”

Democratic leaders and press freedom groups have criticized the moves as violations of free speech.

For more context on the matter, please consider Mary Rose Papandrea the Burchfield Professor of First Amendment and Free Speech Law at the George Washington University Law School. Papandrea is an expert on the First Amendment, free speech and media law. The author of Social Media, Public School Teachers, and the First Amendment, Papandrea explores public school’s teachers use of social media and First Amendment protections.

Papandrea can discuss threats to the press, reporters privilege, teacher’s free speech rights, education and government employee speech issues.
