Media Tip Sheet: NASA Launches the Artemis II Mission

April 6, 2026

WASHINGTON (April 6, 2026) – Last Wednesday, NASA launched the Artemis II mission, marking it as the first crewed flight to the Moon’s vicinity since the Apollo program in 1972. Although the Artemis II will not land on the Moon, the mission will send astronauts around the planet to test if the spacecraft can safely sustain a crew for future space exploration.

If the mission goes as planned, the capsule will reach the moon near April 6, the sixth day of the mission. The Artemis II is a key step in NASA’s broader Artemis program, which aims to establish human presence on the Moon. NASA’s next launch is currently scheduled for 2027 and will involve the Orion spacecraft docking in Earth’s orbit.
