Media Tip Sheet: New CBO Debt Projections

February 16, 2023

Two reports released by the Congressional Budget Office yesterday are sure to cause a stir on Capitol Hill and in the White House. The CBO expects the “extraordinary measures” the U.S. Treasury is taking to pay the nation’s bills to run out of steam sometime between July and September. The nonpartisan agency also predicts the national debt will increase by $19 trillion over the next decade.

Joseph Cordes is a professor of economics, public policy and public administration, and international affairs at the George Washington University. Professor Cordes is an expert on the federal budget and tax policy and is available to discuss the CBO’s latest projected figures and timelines related to the national debt. He can also dive into the potential consequences of failing to address these debt-related problems and the measures policymakers can take to avoid an economic catastrophe.
