WASHINGTON (June 26, 2025) – While the hospitality industry is booming in European destinations like France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the Netherlands, local backlash is mounting. In 2024 alone, Europe welcomed 747 million international travelers, resulting in more visitors filtering through than Europe’s own population and putting strain on local infrastructure, environment, and communities.
Professor Cevat Tosun is available for analysis and insights on the growing tensions around overtourism and sustainable travel solutions. Tosun holds the Eisenhower Chair in Tourism Studies at the GW School of Business and directs the MS in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management program. A global authority on tourism policy and planning, he specializes in sustainable tourism, destination management, and community impact.
Tosun can discuss overtourism, tourism taxes, and sustainable tourism development. If you would like to speak with Professor Tosun, please contact GW Senior Media Relations Specialist Claire Sabin at claire [dot] sabingwu [dot] edu (claire[dot]sabin[at]gwu[dot]edu).
