WASHINGTON (May 20, 2024)—India has entered its fifth stage out of six for its national election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the Hindu Nationalist is seeking a third term. The Associated Press reports that Modi’s opening of a Hindu temple earlier this year was betting on mixing Hindu nationalism and politics.

Alyssa Ayres, Dean, Elliott School of International Affairs. Dean Ayres is an expert on India’s role in the world and in U.S. relations with South Asia in the larger Indo-Pacific. Dean Ayres is a foreign policy practitioner and award-winning author with senior experience in the government, nonprofit, and private sectors. Dean Ayres serves as an adjunct senior fellow for India, Pakistan, and South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. Previously, Dean Ayres served as deputy assistant secretary of state for South Asia during the Obama administration. During Ayres’s time at the State Department, she provided policy direction for four US embassies and four consulates.
James Foster, Oliver T. Carr, Jr. Professor of International Affairs and Professor of Economics at the George Washington University. Foster is an expert on international economic development, inequality and poverty, and economic theory and policy. His research focuses on welfare economics—using economic tools to evaluate and enhance the wellbeing of people.
Emmanuel Teitelbaum, Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at the George Washington University.
