President Biden will sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law at a White House ceremony today, the final step in a bipartisan breakthrough for LGBTQ+ Americans. The legislation repeals the Defense of Marriage Act and requires state governments and the federal government to legally recognize same-sex marriages. The measure effectively serves as a firewall upholding the right to same-sex marriage if the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell v. Hodges.
Stephen Forssell, founder and director of the LGBT Health Policy & Practice Graduate Certificate Program at the George Washington University, is available to discuss the Respect for Marriage Act from several angles.
