Media Tip Sheet: Respect for Marriage Act

December 13, 2022

President Biden will sign the Respect for Marriage Act into law at a White House ceremony today, the final step in a bipartisan breakthrough for LGBTQ+ Americans. The legislation repeals the Defense of Marriage Act and requires state governments and the federal government to legally recognize same-sex marriages. The measure effectively serves as a firewall upholding the right to same-sex marriage if the Supreme Court overturns Obergefell v. Hodges.

Stephen Forssell, founder and director of the LGBT Health Policy & Practice Graduate Certificate Program at the George Washington University, is available to discuss the Respect for Marriage Act from several angles. Dr. Forssell can explain what the law does do and what it does not do, where it triumphs and where it falls short. He is also able to place the Respect for Marriage Act in the context of other efforts to preserve and expand LGBTQ+ rights across the U.S.
