Media Tip Sheet: Smart Devices Are Turning Everyday Life Into Evidence

March 18, 2026

WASHINGTON (March 18, 2026) – The ubiquity of smart speakers, fitness trackers, connected cars, and home security systems has made it easier than ever for personal data to be tracked and stored. Andrew Ferguson was recently featured in a Texas Public Radio segment highlighting growing concern that these everyday technologies are fueling a new kind of surveillance ecosystem, one in which consumers may be unknowingly documenting their own lives in ways that can later be accessed by companies or law enforcement.

Andrew Ferguson, professor of law at the George Washington University Law School, is a national expert on predictive policing, big data surveillance, and the Fourth Amendment. Ferguson is a former public defender and author of Your Data Will Be Used Against You (2026).
