Media Tip Sheet: Summer Sun Safety Month

August 4, 2025

August is Summer Sun Safety Month, an awareness campaign dedicated to educating people about the importance of protecting themselves from the sun's harmful UV rays during the summer months.

Skin is the body’s largest organ, so it’s not a surprise that skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer. Each year, about 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States.

The George Washington University has experts available who can discuss the importance of protecting your skin from the sun and risk factors. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact Katelyn Deckelbaum, katelyn [dot] deckelbaumatgwu [dot] edu (katelyn[dot]deckelbaum[at]gwu[dot]edu).

Vishal Patel is an associate professor of dermatology at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences and the director of the Cutaneous Oncology Program at the GW Cancer Center.

Adam Friedman is the chair of dermatology at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Pooja Sodha, is the director for the center for laser and cosmetic dermatology at GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
