As a number of major retailers across the United States roll out big savings around Black Friday, experts say it’s also important to think about supporting local on Small Business Saturday. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, consumers spend an estimated $184 billion on Small Business Saturday.
If you would like more context on this matter, please consider Kathy Korman Frey, an industry instructor of entrepreneurship and the director of the Center For Entrepreneurial Excellence at the George Washington University School of Business. She helped develop and currently teaches Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership (WEL) at GW Business. Frey is the founder of the edtech social venture The Hot Mommas Project, the world’s largest women’s case study library providing access to diverse, teachable, scalable role models and mentors from around the world. Her areas of expertise include entrepreneurship, women and business, venture funded start-up, market and acquisition (buy-side) research, and edtech.
Korman Frey can discuss consumer trends around Small Business Saturday as well as the importance of supporting local all year round and supporting established student and alum small businesses.
Additionally, Korman Frey leads a group of student entrepreneurs who recently competed in GW’s Pitch George Competition, which allows young entrepreneurs from any GW school to present their business ideas, get valuable feedback on the viability of their business concepts, and win up to $10,000 in startup capital.
HUE Media, which placed second at Pitch George, is a production company that creates content centralized around human connection and empathy through the active de-stigmatization and de-sensationalism of typically “polarizing” or difficult conversations.
Credit Catalyst, which placed third at Pitch George, will bridge the gap between college students and those new to personal finance through an application-based platform to be coupled with an existing credit card company. A cash back program will be implemented to help users start passively investing and grow their financial assets.
If you would like to speak with Prof. Korman Frey or student entrepreneurs with either of these groups who are beginning their business journeys, please contact GW Senior Media Relations Specialist Cate Douglass at cdouglassgwu [dot] edu (cdouglass[at]gwu[dot]edu).
