Media Tip Sheet: TikTok’s Baking Soda Skin Hack: Cheap Glow or Costly Mistake?

September 24, 2025

Millions of TikTok users are buzzing about an unexpected skincare trend: exfoliating with baking soda. Videos claiming the pantry staple can clear acne, smooth skin, and even fix hyperpigmentation have racked up millions of views.

But dermatologists warn there’s more to the story. Experts caution it can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance and cause microtears that make skin vulnerable to irritation and infection. For those with sensitive skin, it could do more harm than good.

This conversation raises timely questions about the risks of DIY beauty hacks, especially in an era when consumers are looking for budget-friendly alternatives to expensive skincare routines.

The George Washington University has experts available who can break down what baking soda does to the skin, share why tiktok hacks like this go viral and offer safer, cost-conscious skincare alternatives that work.
