Media Tip Sheet: Trump's Twitter Restoration and the Future of Social Media Political Discourse

November 22, 2022

Elon Musk wasted little time in restoring the Twitter account of former president Donald Trump. Pointing to the results of an unscientific poll he tweeted, the mercurial Musk flipped the switch on the former president’s Twitter profile, which had been suspended since shortly after the January 6, 2021 insurrection. The decision raises a host of new questions. Which other previously banned characters will be welcomed back onto Twitter? What type of content will be tolerated? Will Trump ever tweet again?

David Karpf, an associate professor of media and public affairs, focuses on strategic communication practices of political associations in America, with a particular interest in Internet-related strategies. Professor Karpf has written numerous articles about the ramifications of Musk’s purchase of Twitter and can comment extensively on the consequences of Trump’s return to Twitter.
