Media Tip Sheet: When Sunlight Turns Against You: The Strange World of Sun-Induced Skin Disorders

July 21, 2025

When we think of sun damage, we usually imagine sunburns or skin cancer but for some, sunlight can cause far stranger and more immediate reactions.

Photodermatosis is an impactful condition that can trigger everything from hives and swelling to delayed, blistering rashes and occurs after exposure to light.

Different Types:

  • Polymorphous Light Eruption: A mysterious rash that spares the face but erupts hours after UV exposure.
  • Solar Urticaria: An almost allergic reaction to sunlight, where hives can develop within minutes and even lead to anaphylaxis.
  • Photoallergic Reactions: Where sunlight and certain chemicals (like sunscreens, fragrances, or medications) collide, provoking the immune system days later.

These disorders are often overlooked or misdiagnosed, despite having distinct patterns, triggers, and treatments.

Adam Friedman, professor and chair of dermatology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences can discuss what the public needs to know about these conditions especially as climate change and UV intensity grow.
