Media Tip Sheet: White House Readies New Sanctions on Russia After Death of Russian Opposition Leader

February 21, 2024

The White House is promising new sanctions on Russia in response to the death of Russian opposition leader and prominent Vladimir Putin critic, Alexei Navalny, in prison last week. According to The Associated Press, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the sanctions “will be a substantial package covering a range of different elements of the Russian defense industrial base, and sources of revenue for the Russian economy that power Russia’s war machine, that power Russia’s aggression, and that power Russia’s repression.” The announcement comes just days ahead of the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
